Russia's Tsunami

Hi readers! Today, we are going to talk about the earthquake and tsunami that happened in Russia.

More about what happened:

A powerful 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck Russia's Kuril Islands on July 30th 2025. The earthquake triggered a tsunami, and parts of Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula was warned. Russian officials said the tsunami could cause high waves and super high tides! However, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre told everyone that there was no danger of a tsunami reaching Hawaii.

Facts:

- The tsunami cut power in many areas and completely flooded the Russian fishing port with tsunami waves exceeded 3 metres, the largest up to 5 metres. On a positive note though, there were only minor injuries caused!

The earthquake was one of the strongest ever recorded, but its tsunami was not as bad as feared.

Challenge:

Think about how earthquakes and tsunamis are created

Here are some videos that explain more about this earthquake:

Why is it So Hot This July?

Hi readers! You might have heard people say that this July is one of the hottest ever. That’s not just where you live—it’s happening all over the world. But why?

Let’s break it down in a way that makes sense.

These are the two main reasons for this heat in July:

1. The Earth is Already Warmer

Over the past 100+ years, humans have burned lots of coal, oil, other fossil fuels. This puts gases like carbon dioxide into the air, trapping heat—like a giant invisible blanket around the planet. This is called climate change, and it’s making every year warmer than the ones before.

 2. El Niño is Adding Extra Heat

This year, there’s something else happening too: it’s called El Niño

It’s when the Pacific Ocean gets warmer than usual. That warm ocean heats the air above it, and warm air spreads around the world. El Niño doesn’t happen every year, but when it does, it can make the whole planet hotter than usual—on top of the heat from climate change.

How is Heat in July Affecting the Rest of the World?

  1. Scientific studies show that human activities, like burning fossil fuels, are increasing the frequency and intensity of extreme heat events.
  2. Extreme heat can disrupt natural ecosystems, impacting plant life, animal habitats, and water bodies.
  3. Hot, dry conditions amplify the risk of wildfires, especially when combined with other factors like lightning strikes.
  4. Hot weather increases the use of air conditioners, putting stress on power grids. This can cause blackouts and disrupt important services.

How can we help reduce heat waves?

Reducing heat waves begins with the small actions that also help reduce global warming. Global warming increases global temperature, leading to more frequent and longer heat waves.

Here are a few ways we can reduce heat waves/global warming:

  1. Be smart with your everyday life! - switch to more sustainable light sources, such as LED lights. Try to switch off all electrical appliances when leaving a room/when not in use.
  2. Transportation - Bike to short distances, or use public transports, like subways, buses, etc. You can even carpool with friends!
  3. Plant more trees! - there are many scientific theories today that say trees can cool the air due to multiple complicated processes, such as shading and transpiration (the water vapor trees produce onto their leaves, which cools the air.)

Poem for the Planet

Hi readers! Today, we have written an inspiring couplet called A Cry for the Earth. We wrote a poem about protecting our lands - also talking about expressing concerns for our planet through creative ways.

A Cry for the Earth

Flowers wilt, trees die,

Smoke covers the once magnificent sky.

Trash carelessly thrown away,
Voices that matter lost in the fray.

Animals cower, their habitats destroyed—
The realities are hitting us; this is something we can't avoid!

Sea threatens to swallow land,
The glaciers are melting faster than we planned.

Plastic littering the beautiful sea—
Of this torment, marine life can never be free!

What can we do about our once pure land?
We must help—from the skies, the hills, and the sand.

Fires rage where forests stood tall,
Nature's cry echoes through it all.

Air once crisp, now thick with despair,
We gasp for breath, but there's poison in the air.

The bees are dying, crops fail to grow,
A warning in every breeze that blows.

Floods submerge where people sleep,
The earth is wounded; its scars run deep.

But in our hands lies the power to heal—
To act with purpose, to truly feel.

So rise with hope, take a stand,
Together we can protect this land.

In conclusion, we deeply encourage all of you to also take a stand. Spreading awareness about our planet doesn’t have to be boring - you can express your concerns through many fun ways - singing, acting, writing - whatever you want! Let’s have a sustainable summer together!

Cloudbursts!

Hi readers! Today, we'll be teaching you about cloudbursts and their impact on the environment and society!

What is a cloudburst?

A cloudburst is when it suddenly starts raining very heavily in a specific area - and it can cause floods and can wreck havoc.

How are cloudbursts created?
Cloudbursts can be caused by climate change, lack of wind and lack of how much the wind is moving , and too much moisture and humidity.

How did it affect Himachal?
Recent cloudbursts in Himachal Pradesh have caused devastating flash floods, landslides, and destruction of infrastructure. Dozens have lost their lives, roads and bridges have collapsed, and entire communities have been displaced. Districts like Kullu, Mandi, and Kangra were hit hardest, with massive economic and environmental losses. It was devastating- but it got us wondering how WE can help.

So...🌱 What Can We Do?
We aren’t able to entirely stop cloudbursts, as they are a natural phenomenon, but we can reduce how often they come and how bad it is. This means that we can play a part in making living conditions much better for people in areas that recieve cloudburts.

  • Reduce carbon emissions: Use public transport or walk, switch to renewable energy, and conserve electricity.
  • Plant more trees: Forest cover helps absorb rainwater and prevent soil erosion.
  • Avoid construction near rivers or slopes: Support eco-sensitive zoning laws to reduce disaster risk.
  • Support sustainable tourism: Choose eco-friendly travel options and respect local environments. Be careful while sightseeing and take care that you are not imposing on an animal's habitat.
We have to play our part in reducing the risk of cloudbursts. While we may not entirely fix the problem, we can be one step closer to the solution!

These are some pictures of how a cloudburst looks and the effects of it on society!

Sustainable Summer!

Hi readers! Today, we have thought of multiple activities that you can do this summer - but the catch is , it’s all sustainable!

One suggestion is: for those who live in outdoor areas: create a list of nature items such as pinecones and go on a scavenger hunt to find them. Then, with what you find, create a fun DIY project such as a pinecone headband or a flower chain!

(This is how a pinceone headband would look!)

Our second suggestion: You could use old shirts and make them into something new using your at home art supplies! You can make their own designs... based on your interests or likes!

A design made by one of our bloggers based on her likes (Music and Taylor Swift!)

Remember, don't hold back! Be as creative as you like.

Hope you enjoy your summer - and remember to always stay sustainable!

DIY Sunday! T-Shirt Tote Bag!

What You’ll Need:

  • 1 old T-shirt (any size, the thicker the better)

  • A pair of scissors

Steps:

  1. Lay your shirt flat.
Smooth it out on a table or the floor. Make sure the front and back are lined up.

  2. Cut off the sleeves.
Cut around both armholes. These will become the bag’s handles.

  3. Cut out the neck hole.
Cut a semi-circle around the neck to make the top opening of your bag — just like a tank top.

  4. Make the fringe.
At the bottom of the shirt, cut small vertical slits (about 1–2 inches long) all the way across. Front and back. You should have a fringe now!

  5. Tie it up.
Take each pair of front and back fringe strips and tie them together in a tight double knot. This closes the bottom of the bag.

  6. Test it!
Tug gently to make sure no holes are left. Ta-da! You just made your own reusable tote.

How to Use It:

  • Carry groceries, snacks, or books

  • Take it to the market or store instead of using plastic bags

  • Decorate it with markers, patches, or pins to show your style

Why It’s Eco-Friendly:

  • Gives old clothes a new purpose instead of throwing them away

  • Replaces single-use plastic bags

  • Can be reused hundreds of times

An image of how it should look at the end (use your creativity and decorate your bag however you want)!

Are humans the only causes for global warming?

Hi guys! Today, we'll be inquiring into a very popular question: are humans the only causes for global warming?

Answer: Human and natural factors both influence the earth's climate, but the long-term trend observed over the past century can only be explained by the effect of human activities on climate. Humans are the primary cause of modern global warming, but not the only factor influencing Earth’s climate.

Natural Factors that impact global warming:

  • Changes in the Sun's Activity:

The sun's energy output varies over time, which can influence Earth's climate.

  • Volcanic Eruptions:

Large volcanic eruptions can release dust and aerosols into the atmosphere, temporarily cooling the planet.

  • Earth's Orbit:

Variations in Earth's orbit can alter the amount of solar radiation received by the planet, leading to long-term climate changes.

  • Natural Greenhouse Effect:

The Earth naturally has a greenhouse effect, where greenhouse gases trap heat and keep the planet warm enough to support life.

Human Activities that impact global warming:

  • Burning Fossil Fuels:

Burning coal, oil, and natural gas releases large quantities of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.

  •  Deforestation:

Trees absorb CO2 from the atmosphere, so deforestation reduces this carbon sink and contributes to increased atmospheric CO2 levels.

  • Industrial Processes:

Many industrial processes also release greenhouse gases, contributing to the overall warming trend.

  • Agriculture:

Livestock farming and the use of fertilizers release methane and nitrous oxide, powerful greenhouse gases.

  • Landfill Waste:

Decomposing waste in landfills generates methane, a potent greenhouse gas.

  • Transportation:

Burning fossil fuels in vehicles releases CO2 and other pollutants, contributing to global warming.

Indore- India's cleanest city

Hi readers! Today, we'll be writing about Indore, a fast-growing city in India, which has emerged as a model for sustainable waste management practices.

Why and how is Indore so sustainable?

Indore, recognized as India's cleanest city for seven consecutive years, has made significant strides in sustainability through a comprehensive approach to waste management, including 100% source segregation, door-to-door collection, and waste-to-resource initiatives, robust waste management, promoting energy efficiency, and fostering community participation, setting a benchmark for sustainable urban living.

Facts on Indore and it's environment;

  1.  The city has resolved about 90% of its solid waste challenge!
  2. 95% of households give segregated waste, Before, 80% of people would not segregate waste!
  3. Indore's Municipal Corporation (IMC) partnered with non governmental organisations for an awareness campaign to change the behaviour of its citizens, contracted private companies to run some waste management operations, used technology, and improved municipal capacity to ensure the implementation of its waste management plan.
  4. The central waste processing facility is built on what used to be Indore’s largest dumping ground.
  5. Every night, 800 km of main roads are swept by machines, footpaths and road dividers are washed by a water mist. This uses 400 litres of water every night, most of it recycled water from the three sewage treatment plants set up by the IMC.

Littering at social events!

Hi readers! Sorry for not posting so long, but we're back at it by writing about the problem of littering at social events.

Major music festivals and concerts can generate a significant amount of waste, including a large quantity of plastic, with some festivals producing up to 100 tons of solid waste. Around 9,000 kilograms of waste are generated by audiences, consisting mainly of plastic boxes, bottles, glasses, banned plastic bags, cups and straws, and cardboard food boxes.

Negetive effects

Littering at social events is a problem with many negative impacts like:

• Environmental Damage:
Litter pollutes the environment, harms wildlife, and can contaminate water sources.

• Health Risks:
Litter can attract pests and create unsanitary conditions, posing health risks to people.

• Aesthetic Issues:
Litter detracts from the beauty and enjoyment of public spaces.

• Social Costs:
Litter can lead to a decline in property values and a sense of community neglect

But you can help! Here's how!

  • Inform attendees:
Spread awareness to remind people about the importance of proper waste disposal and the impact of littering.

    Highlight the consequences:
  • Emphasize the negative effects of littering, such as environmental damage and the creation of an unappealing environment.

    Promote responsible behavior:
Encourage attendees to take ownership of their waste and dispose of it properly.

Your Carbon Footprint and how to Reduce it

Hi readers! Happy New year! For our first post for 2025, we will be writing about how to reuce your carbon footprint, since we are learning about this in our ongoing Unit Of Inquiry. Enjoy!

What is a carbon footprint?A carbon footprint is the total amount of greenhouse gases (GHGs) released into the atmosphere by a person, product, organization, or event. Some GHGs include carbon dioxide, water vapour and methane. The larger a carbon footprint is, the greater the strain on the environment.

The carbon footprint of an individual can be affected by many factors in your daily life, including: Food consumption, clothing purchases, waste disposal, and more.

Here are some ways to reduce your carbon footprint:

1. Reduce waste: Recycle materials, cut down on plastic, and reduce food waste.

2. Conserve water: Fix leaks, take shorter showers, and turn off the tap while brushing your teeth.

3. Use reusable cups, plates, utensils, bottles and containers.

4. Travel efficiently: Walk or bike instead of driving, and take fewer connecting flights.

5. Reduce energy use: Turn off lights when you leave a room or your home, and replace old light bulbs with LEDs.

Some facts about your carbon footprint:

1. The average carbon footprint for a person in the United States is 16 tons, one of the highest rates in the world. Globally, the average carbon footprint is almost 4 tons.

2. Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from human activities are now higher than at any point in our history. In fact, recent data reveals that global CO2 emissions were 182 times higher in 2022 than they were in 1850, around the time the Industrial Revolution was underway.

3. Food Production Accounts for 83% of Carbon Emissions Each Year.

Overpopulation (and how we spread awareness in our school!)

Hi readers! Today, we'll be teaching you about overpopulation and how it harms the environment. This topic also connects to our ongoing unit, Sharing the planet, where we are learning about finite resources. In this post, we are also going to talk about how we inspired younger children in our school and spread awareness too! Let's start with that:

We were invited by out third grade teacher, the people who played a big role to inspire us to write this blog. We actuallly started our blog in third grade! We prepared a presentation, and in groups of two. We taught 64 children altogether about how they can help with environmental difficulties. This was an amazing opportunity, and we thank out past teachers for choosing us to inspire the young minds of the future.

Now, onto overpopulation and how it harms the environment:

- Overpopulation leads to an increased demand for housing, food, and resources, which can lead, among other things, to deforestation.

This can lead to soil erosion, water pollution, and other forms of damage that can have severe consequences.

- In connection to our unit, larger populations require more food, water, and energy, and consequently taxes the earth's ability to replace overused or misused resources.

Overpopulation also depletes wildlufe to dangerously low levels

In summary, the fossils consumed, the resources depleted, the forests cleared, the heat produced, and the global warming caused are all repercussions of the fast-growing population.

Here are some images of when we were sharing about our blog:

How to celebrate Diwali sustainably!

Hi readers! Sorry we haven't posted in a while, we were on our Diwali break. Speaking of Diwali, today we'll be telling you how to celebrate Diwali sustainably.

On Diwali days, PM2.5(stands for particulate matter 2.5, used to describe tiny particles in the air that are 2.5 micrometers levels) can surge up to 40% in Mumbai. So here's how you can do your bit by using this tips for an eco-friendly Diwali!

  • Eco-friendly Diyas: Choose clay diyas over plastic ones, and use natural paints or decorate them with eco-friendly materials.
  • Sustainable Gifts: Give gifts that are handmade, plant-based, or locally sourced, such as potted plants, organic sweets, or recycled products.
  • Zero-Waste Festivities: Plan meals that minimize food waste, and compost leftovers instead of throwing them away.
  • Community Clean-Up: Organize or participate in a community clean-up after the festivities to keep the environment clean.
  • Energy-efficient Lighting: Use LED lights instead of traditional bulbs to reduce energy consumption.
  • Eco-conscious Clothing: Wear traditional attire made from sustainable fabrics or consider thrift shopping for festive outfits.
  • Promote Awareness: Share eco-friendly practices with friends and family to inspire others to celebrate sustainably.
  • Natural Rangoli designs: Avoid the harmful effects of chemicals used in rangolicolours by using flower petals, rice and natural dyes, or spices.
  • Say No to firecrackers: The best thing you can do for the environment this Diwali is to pledge not to burst firecrackers. Firecrackers pollute the air we breathe, raise noise levels, and can also lead to serious burns and loss of vision if not handled properly.

This Diwali, we must make mindful and sustainable that not only contribute to our fun, but also to the environments benefit.

Mythbusters!

Hi readers! Today, we'll be busting some crazy myths about the environment. Enjoy!

Myth 1 – CO2 emission can be eradicated completely

In today’s world, everything we use has a carbon footprint. Regardless of the products contributing directly or indirectly towards the carbon footprint, nothing can be done to fully eradicate carbon emissions completely. However, we can minimise it by using greener means of transport, walking to short distances, spreading awareness about climate change, and much more.

Myth 2 – Climate change is a natural process and has nothing to do with people.

Climate change is a natural process, but lately, humans have been pushing it onto overdrive, by littering, burning fossil fuels, and cutting down trees!

Myth 3 – Climate change has always happened, so we shouldn't worry about it.

It is true that the planet’s temperature has long fluctuated, with periods of warming and cooling. But since the last ice age 10,000 years ago, the climate has been relatively stable, which scientists say has been crucial to the development of human civilization. That stability is now faltering. The Earth is heating up at its fastest rate in at least 2,000 years and is about 1.2 C hotter than it was in pre-industrial times. The last 10 years have been the warmest on record!

Here is an image on how climate change impacts us:

To conclude this post, the issue is not saving the planet, but rather protecting the planet’s existing ecological systems so that humans can prosper on a healthy planet. And seen in this light, defending the environment is never an all or nothing proposition — every acre of land protected, every stream cleaned up, every toxin reduced, all of it matters.

The Impact of Landforms on Wildlife

Hi readers! Today, we'll be writing about the inpact of landforms on wildlife! Read on to know more!

Habitat loss, climate change, and a lack of biodiversity can all make ecosystems unhealthy, putting wildlife at greater risk for disease. Pollution. Every day the byproducts of our daily lives make their way via the air and water into the natural environment and become pollutants. By understanding the distribution of endangered and threatened species, conservation geographers can support targeted conservation efforts. They assist in designing conservation strategies, such as habitat restoration or captive breeding programs, to safeguard these imperiled species.

There is a serious threat to biodiversity from climate change. Conservation geographers are essential in helping identify areas that are most vulnerable to climate change impacts and in developing strategies to assist species in adapting to changing conditions (Hoang et al., 2021). This may involve establishing wildlife corridors or protected areas that can serve as refuges for species affected.

Therefore, we need to protect our planet and wildlife, like Earth has sheltered us for centuries. We need to consider the fact that we are not the only living beings on this planet, and we need to respect all others, as they are equally important to our planet's balance.

Here is an image you help you understand this issue better:

Resource Depletion (50th post!)

Hi readers! For our 50th post, we will be writing about resource depletion. Read on to find out more!

What is resource depletion?

Resource depletion is the consumption of a resource faster than it can be replenished. Natural resources are commonly divided between renewable resources and non-renewable resources. The use of either of these forms of resources beyond their rate of replacement is considered to be resource depletion.

How is resource depletion harming our environment?

The unsustainable use of natural resources has led to their depletion and caused significant environmental damage. Over-exploitation of resources such as forests, minerals and water has resulted in pollution, loss of biodiversity, and soil erosion. Air Pollution, water pollution, solid wastes, agrochemicals, radioactive wastes, greenhouse effect and global warming, ozone depletion, improper resource utilisation and deforestation are some of the main causes of depletion of natural resources.

Here are some ways to prevent this issue:

1) Make Electricity Use More Efficient.

2) Use More Renewable Energy.

3) Promote Sustainable Fishing Rules.

4) Avoid Single-Use Plastics.

5) Drive Less.

6) Recycle More and Improve Recycling Systems.

7) Use Sustainable Agriculture Practices.

8) Reduce Food Waste.

In conclusion, natural resource depletion is a critical issue that requires urgent attention. We must act now to conserve these precious resources and adopt sustainable practices to ensure a healthy and sustainable future for our planet and all its inhabitants.

Here are some images to show you how resource depletion is harming our environment:

Thank you all so much for reading and supporting our blog! We are so happy to have made a change and inspired others around us to help save our environment. 49 posts have flown by, and we are overjoyed that this is our 50th post. This is a huge milestone for The Sunday Bloggers. See you soon, readers!
